TO the tourists who flock there every year, Devon is the home of beautiful beaches, picture-postcard villages and, of course, scones and clotted cream.
But the county council has a different view.
In an advert for a new [pounds sterling]150,000a-year chief executive, it used a fake road sign with the words 'Welcome to Devon'.
Underneath was the message: 'Home of rural deprivation, a low income economy, property inflation, an ageing population - and your next challenge.'
The council, which paid [pounds sterling]9,000 for the ad, claims it was designed to dispel the myths about the county.
