It has inspired a novel, three movies, and a Broadway show. But for devotees of the Iowa State Fair, nothing beats making the annual pilgrimage to Des Moines. Months before last summer's 11-day celebration began, many of the fair's 1,800 campsites were sold out, as campers built vacations around the chance to see the famed butter cow, 20-acre farm machinery show, and world-class livestock. "I first came to the fair with my parents in the early 1960s in a friend's grain truck," says gingerbread-house-building champ Terri Johnson. Come along with Country Living--and more than one million fair visitors--as we salute an American tradition.
