They rarely smiled in photos.
The images of some of Colorado's first Italians show sober-faced people in fields or near lettuce-filled boxes that rested on the backs of cars.
Some in the black-and-white photographs wield shovels illuminated by a light bulb on the subject's wrinkled cap.
Many of the photos tell of toil, such as the stoic woman preparing to scoop a round loaf from a backyard bread oven.
But others recall pie and ice cream, movie nights at the Bug Theatre and bare feet on Welby Street as white- robed youths joined a Communion procession.
