Although heavy alcohol consumption may lead to many adverse consequences, studies have shown that light to moderate alcohol consumption may have some benefits, including lowering coronary artery disease mortality. However, most studies have not included individuals older than 65 years of age. To determine whether alcohol has a protective effect in older persons, Scherr and colleagues conducted a prospective cohort study of community-dwelling senior citizens.
