NEW YORK -- Most Americans prefer private label food and beverages to those of national brands, two recent taste tests have found.
In 10 locations nationwide double-blind tests conducted for the Private Label Manufacturers Association (PLMA) by the Meyers Research Center found that, by 51% to 49%, consumers favor store brands over national brands.
A separate, similar but unscientific test of suburban New Jersey consumers conducted by the ABC News "20/20" program produced similar results. It found that consumers "had a difficult time determining which was the store brand and which was the national brand."
