Dan Gertler, founder and owner of Dan Gertler International (DGI) Group of Companies, has made news headlines more than once in his colorful career in the diamond industry--the latest of which is having being granted sole rights by Alrosa to market rough diamonds from the Angolan Catoca mine in Israel, simultaneously by-passing Lev Leviev.

The announcement about the Catoca deal was made on April 27 by Alrosa's president, Alexander Nichiporuk, during an historic visit to Israel by Russian president Vladimir Putin. It reportedly will see exports from Catoca to Israel of about $250-300 million a year and around 300,000 carats monthly.
