ONE of the first stamped envelopes sent to a North Wales town could sell for pounds 1,000 at auction, experts said yesterday.

The 165-year-old letter, posted to a lawyer in Dolgellau, carried a rare Penny Black stamp.

But collectors were expected to be attracted to the undated envelope because it was given a Maltese cross - two red postmark cancellations.

Experts at London's Bonhams, who will auction the envelope on August 2, say it is one of the rarest and most valuable specimens to come on the market.
