Jul. 21--EAGLE PASS-PIEDRAS NEGRAS -- Like other border twins, each of these cities has a retail sector heavily reliant on sales to residents of the other twin. But Piedras Negras never developed a huge tourism sector totally dependent on Americans crossing the bridge for dining, drinks and trinkets. Its mercado, in fact, is still a functional market that locals shop.
As a result, says Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce executive Sandra Martinez, the impact of widespread reports of border-city violence is hardly noticeable.
