House votes to extend Patriot Act.

WASHINGTON _ The House voted overwhelmingly Thursday to renew broad law enforcement powers for anti-terrorism investigations after a debate that pitted concerns about civil liberties against fears of attacks.

As news filtered in to the Capitol of explosions on the London transit system _ just two weeks after a similar but more devastating attack killed 56 people _ the House spent more than nine hours debating the USA Patriot Act before voting 257-171 to approve it. Forty-three Democrats joined 214 Republicans in voting to renew key provisions of Patriot Act that were set to expire at the of year.
