The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), a UK advisory body, has recently published new guidelines relating to caesarean section. One of its main messages is that maternal request on its own is not an indication for a caesarean. In 2001, 21.5% of pregnant women in England and Wales had a caesarean section of whom 7% (i.e. 1.5% of all births) were at the mother's request.
