IT MAY be one of BBC Radio 2's longest-running shows, but Friday Night is Music Night - broadcast live from the Liverpool Summer Pops - still has the power to pack in a few surprises.
There were the expected songs from the shows played by the BBC Concert Orchestra - Gypsy, Guys and Dolls and Call Me Madame among them - and some exciting orchestral gems like the Spanish Gypsy Dance.
These were all played with some attack under the baton of Richard Balcombe, often with intriguing arrangements.
