PANMUNJOM, South Korea _ In a pouring rain, Staff Sgt. Richard J. Henkes of Seattle stood before a squad of helmeted South Korean sentries, their fists clenched, their forearms locked at their sides. Across the street, two North Korean soldiers paced the portico of a large building.

Staff Sgt. Henkes expressed pride in being part of an elite battalion at freedom's forward outpost. But the sentiment of the battalion's motto _ "in front of them all" _ suddenly deflated as two buses loaded with tourists drove between the South and North Korean troops.
