At the end of June, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved the construction of a new terminal for the import of liquefied natural gas in Fall River. Earlier this month the Massachusetts House voted to sidetrack a bill that would have blocked the project. Both decisions have been made despite the intense opposition of local residents and officials, congressmen, both U.S. senators and the governor.
In justifying their decision, federal regulators and state representatives all cited concerns for meeting our region's expanding energy needs. This is laudable. The prospect of running out of gas during a cold snap in January is ...
