A consensus is building on biodegradability

The U.S. market for surfactants in 1992 showed small gains overall but displayed stronger growth for niche specialties and higher value-added products. Most surfactants manufacturers expect growth to match the economy's sluggish pace this year. "U.S. surfactants demand will grow with detergent consumption, which has averaged 1%-1.5% per year," forecasts Rich Lundgren, Jr., business manager for detergent products at Monsanto. "Some modest increase in growth is possible if the actives content of detergents increase, but this is expected to be very small."
