Call Societe Generale a French bank and you quickly raise the hackles of Jean R. Huet, the bank's newly arrived U.S. general manager.

"We're an international bank that operates worldwide rather than just a French bank with an international network," says Mr. Huet.

To strengthen that concept, Mr. Huet has embarked on a drive to improve communications between the bank's 500 U.S. staffers and the rest of Societe Generale.

It also means training staff to cross-sell products and assigning personnel for short periods to the head office in Paris and other locations, including London and Singapore.
