Of all the technologies that make up multimedia, video compression is probably of greatest importance to network planners. After test driving one of the leading PC vide compression solutions, my assessment is as follows: The technology is here, it works and is practical, but a lot of rough edges remain.
The product that I worked wit is called Super Motion Video Compression, a two-board set for PC-compatible computers made by New Media Graphics (Billerica, MA). The complete kit of hardware and software sells for $2,990.
