Heat & Glo, Lakeville, Minn., has taken the next generational step in fueling options, after wood, natural gas and liquid propane with its new fireplace. The Aqueon, to hit the market this summer, burns hydrogen fuel extracted from water.

In 1766, English chemist and physicist Henry Cavendish, discovered hydrogen as a distinct element, and became first person to produce water by combining hydrogen and oxygen. In 1800, William Nicholson and Sir Anthony Carlisle discovered a viable way to produce hydrogen using a process called electrolysis.
