Jul. 24--Three years ago, Mount Pleasant film producer Peter Wentworth quit his smoking habit by chewing nicotine gum.
Now he can't drop his gum habit.
"On one hand, I'm grateful that I quit smoking," Wentworth said. "But now, I'm hooked on Nicorette."
Not everybody is addicted like Wentworth, but Americans are chewing a lot more gum these days. Gum sales reached $3.3 billion last year, according to NPD Group, which called gum the country's favorite snack, even ahead of chocolate.
And sales are growing fast, far outpacing the candy industry as a whole, thanks to a wave of innovation that has brought ...
