Not much research is available on sports and physical activity for the disabled. Researchers are most interested in the psychosocial characteristics of disabled athletes, the physiological aspects of sports and improvements in performance.
Although research focusing on sports and physical activity in the general population is plentiful, research addressing these areas for people with physical disabilities is a recent phenomenon. Some studies were completed prior to the mid-1970s, but most research addressing sports and physical activity for people with physical disabilities has been done in the last 15 years.
