Lightning sparked a number of small fires in Western Oregon early Friday, including six in the Willamette National Forest, prompting officials to send out crews to fight the flareups and scout for others.
Thunderstorms accompanied by spotty rain produced nearly 1,500 lightning strikes in Oregon and Washington between 8 a.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday, the Northwest Fire Coordination Center in Portland said. In their busiest period yet this year, firefighters in Oregon raced to reach dozens of spot fires ignited by lightning.
