A previous column dealt with the wearing of proper socks while running. The possibility of blisters on the feet and toes is a concern of long-distance runners. Here are some tips on prevention and treatment of blisters if they do occur.
Friction is the most likely cause of a blister, when skin rubs against your socks or shoes. The rubbing may also be the result of unusual conditions of the feet, such as bunions, heel spurs, or hammertoes. Heat and moisture tend to cause the feet to swell, which, in turn causes rubbing, resulting in blisters. Running during warm weather, or more intensely, as during a race, may ...
