PEORIA, Ill. _ The first game in the Peoria phase of Nomar Garciaparra's rehab was rained out Tuesday night. But the day was far from a complete loss for the Cubs' 32-year-old shortstop.
Garciaparra was still able to hit in the batting cage. He took a treatment for his healing groin that has sidelined him since April 20. He did some helpful stretching exercises. And he won new friends by standing in the rain for 20 minutes outside the dugout and signing autographs for fans.
"They were standing in the rain, so I tried to sign as many as I could," Garciaparra said. "It got hard signing hats, though. They got too wet.
