Regarding waste management, two letters of formal notice (first stage in infringement proceedings) have been dispatched concerning Italy's failure to comply with Court of Justice rulings highlighting breaches of the Framework Directive on waste (Directive 75/442/EEC, outlining common principles for waste management in the EU). The Commission has also decided to refer Italy to the European Court of Justice over its legislation on end-of-life vehicles, less binding that EU legislation in this area (Directive 2000/53/EC).
