NASA launched a new environmental satellite for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that should improve weather forecasting and help monitor environmental events worldwide.
The satellite, NOAA-18, was launched in spring 2005 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. It will collect data about Earth's surface and atmosphere, with data being used in NOAA's long-range climate and seasonal outlooks, including forecasts for EI Nino and La Nina. NOAA-18 is the fourth in a series of five polar-orbiting operational environmental satellites (POES) with instruments that should provide improved imaging and sounding capabilities.
