The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted the World Heritage Convention (WHC) in November 1972 to define and conserve the world's heritage, drawing up a list of natural and cultural sites whose outstanding values should be preserved for all humanity to ensure their protection through closer co-operation among nations. The WHC, under UNESCO's direction, has inscribed 730 sites on the World Heritage List and has 174 states as signatory parties.
