NEW LONDON, Conn., April 8 -- Lt. Elmar Bornkessel, an officer in the German navy recently became the first German to qualify aboard the CGC Eagle in 59 years.
It has been 59 years since the Coast Guard claimed the German Naval Training Ship Horst Wessel as its own, changing its name to Eagle and giving it a home at the Coast Guard Academy in New London.
Bornkessel, a Frankfurt, Germany native, was serving as ship's navigator for the USS Leyte Gulf in Norfolk, Va., when he learned that the Eagle was in port there. Lt.
