NEW YORK -- Donna Karan Co. could be the next big fashion firm to jump into the red-hot public market.

The word on Wall Street is that the designer company is conducting a "beauty contest" -- shopping for the underwriter that will give it the best deal on an initial public offering. An insider at a firm that has been approached by Karan confirmed the report Wednesday.

While investment banking sources declined to speak for attribution, several said talk of a planned IPO has been floating around for weeks. According to one source, 10 investment firms have made pitches to underwrite the offering.
