HIGH-stakes court cases that will determine Canada's ability to export cattle, beef and beef products to the U.S. will play out in two federal courtrooms: one this week in Seattle, Wash., and the other in a July 27 nail-biter in Billings, Mont.

The most crucial is the Billings hearing before U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull on a petition from R-CALF asking for a permanent injunction on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's rule to reopen the border with Canada.

That case has drawn a legal filing from Nobel Laureate Dr. Stanley Prusiner, an authority on prion biology, which could prove pivotal in the case.
