Badly needed rains -- more than 2 inches in some places -- boosted the hopes of salvaging corn and soybean crops in Wisconsin that shriveled from hotter than normal temperatures last week, but more moisture was needed, farm experts said Monday.
More than 75 percent of the state reported very short or short soil moisture and the rains came too late to save some corn crops planted in more sandy soils, the Wisconsin Agricultural Statistics Service said.
About 60 percent of the corn crop was listed in only fair or poor or very poor condition, the agency said in its weekly crop report.
