Some accounts in English of the bombardment of the Iranian Majlis by the Russian officered Cossack Brigade on 23 June 1908 ascribe a major role in the event to N. G. Hartwig, the Russian Representative. This is particularly true of a despatch written in 1910 by Sir George Barclay, then British Representative, summarizing the events surrounding the bombardement.(1) This despatch is the principal origin of the unfavourable view of Hartwig presented by F.
