The southern provinces of Alentejo and the Algarve are the worst affected by the unprecedented dry weather conditions in Portugal this summer. The drought is notably having an effect on water distribution. Some 21 municipalities have now introduced water restrictions, compared with 15 at the end of June, whilst 26,300 people are now having to be supplied by tanker lorries.
Falling water levels in reservoirs have also led to the loss of thousands of fish. Some 75 tonnes of dead fish were removed last week from a reservoir near Ourique in southern Portugal, according to local authorities. To avoid the situation worsening, tonnes of fish are being removed from ...
