'Beach bum' status seen as undeserved in Atlantic Beach, N.C.

Jul. 30--ATLANTIC BEACH -- The term "beach bum" can have good and bad connotations.

But the way the label has been applied to Atlantic Beach by the Natural Resources Defense Council falls in the latter category, and it's a designation that town officials think is undeserved.

"We want to do the right thing, and we don't think this is a fair assessment of what we're doing," said Town Manager Chuck Cooper.

But Frank Tursi, Cape Lookout coastkeeper with the North Carolina Coastal Federation, said the town earned the unsavory recognition this past June when it illegally cut a trench through dunes to pump stormwater directly onto the beach.
