edgar was driving his owner crazy. The gray-and-white cat that Kaaren Haugen had adopted in spring 2004 had a serious litter box issue: As in, he preferred to do his business on the floor. Edgar's potty problem had gotten so bad, Haugen had to set up five boxes in the living room of her Shoreline, Washington, home. And still she discovered disasters on the rug. "He was a stray when I took him in, and it broke my heart to even think of locking him outside," Haugen says. "But he was destroying my carpet!" Even Haugen's veterinarian couldn't fix the problem; but he did recommend that she get some mental help--not for herself, but for Edgar.
