Mayo Clinic researchers, who recently conducted a double-blind, randomized study of 132 women taking either black cohosh pills or a placebo for a four-week period, found that black cohosh worked no better than placebo to reduce menopausal hot flashes. The women, who were divided into two groups, kept a daily hot-flash diary during a baseline week, and then again during the two four-week periods. After completion of the study, the researchers asked for each patient's preference: 34 percent preferred black cohosh, 38 percent preferred the placebo, and 28 did not like either treatment.
