The White House's public relations offensive on Iraq took another wrong turn in early July when outgoing Pentagon hawk Douglas Feith, one of the main architects of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, expressed doubts over key areas of policy. His remarks came a fortnight after US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld warned that it could be "five, six, eight, 10, 12 years" before the insurgency was defeated in Iraq, and that ultimately local security forces, not coalition troops, would have to carry the burden.
