Pro labs face many challenges when servicing professional digital photographers. Frequently, the results rest on the type of digital cameras being used and how well photographers manipulate the image files produced.
Let's look at the question from a pro photographer's standpoint. Most social/portrait photography assignments require at least 8-by-10-inch output, which usually means a minimum 5- to 6-megapixel resolution camera, with the ability to capture "fat" files in high-end JPEG, TIFF, and/or RAW formats on high-storage memory cards. For example, the Kodak Pro 14n, Nikon D1X, and Canon EOS-1 Ds simultaneously capture JPEG and RAW format images.
