CASTAIC - Several empty cages at the Castaic Animal Shelter testify to the tenacity of potential pet owners, despite the closure for months of the main road to the pound.
After winter rains washed out Tapia Canyon Road seven months ago, anyone hoping to adopt a furry friend was routed through the Pitchess Detention Center, a condition that alarmed some animal activists who were afraid adoptions would decline.
``The public has been checking the Web site to see which animals are available and picking them up,'' Animal Control spokeswoman Kaye Michelson said. ``They don't seem to be put off by the road closure.''
