COHN CONCERT ROAD STILL 'WALKING' TOUR '91 HIT REVERBERATES WITH FANS, EVEN AS ARTIST PENS NEW CD.(Spotlight)

Byline: John Lehndorff, Rocky Mountain News

It's the rare song each year that catches the ear of the mainstream American listener long enough to become a hit. Even fewer tunes stand the test of time to become standards and requested rock radio staples.

For the year 1991, the short list includes Marc Cohn's Walking in Memphis from his eponymously titled Atlantic Records debut.

With Cohn's soulful vocal and infectious piano hooks, and iconic references to Elvis and W.C. Handy, the song struck an anthemic chord similar to Don McLean's American Pie. Maybe it was the song's famous refrain: "there's a pretty little thing/ Waiting for the King/ Down in the Jungle Room."
