SURRY COUNTY -- By Bob Ruegsegger
THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT
SURRY COUNTY - Bacon's Castle bears the surname of a patriot or rebel - depending on your political viewpoin t - who never lived in the place.
As a matter of fact, it's very doubtful he ever even set foot on the property.
A hundred years before the American Revolution, Nathaniel Bacon assured himself of a place in American history when he set Jamestown ablaze in September 1676.
The charismatic, young Bacon unsuccessfully challenged Royal Governor William Berkeley's authority during the armed revolt known as Bacon's Rebellion.
