SINCE 1992, Titian's Portrait Of A Young Man With Hat And Gloves has hung in the National Gallery, a solitary example of the shrewd psychological content that he could express when in sympathy with his sitter.
We know nothing of the man; the letter C carved in the architectural relief to the left may be a clue, but he may not even be Italian - the cast of features is more northern and the costume is international.
Was he, perhaps, a German merchant resident in the great entrepUt of Venice or even a young English visitor?
