Aug. 4--DETROIT -- The Daily News' owner announced Wednesday that it had purchased The Detroit News and named Los Angeles Daily News Editor David J. Butler as its editor and publisher.
William Dean Singleton, vice-chairman and CEO of Denver-based MediaNews Group, said the appointment was effective immediately.
Butler, 55, was editor of the Daily News for nearly nine years. He also served as executive vice president/news for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, where he oversaw and coordinated news functions among the eight newspapers and Web sites that MediaNews operates in Southern California.
