CHICAGO -- At the request of a Republican lawmaker, Wisconsin Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager agreed this week to review whether Gov. Jim Doyle overstepped his broad, constitutional veto powers last month when he issued 139 vetoes to reshape the state's $53 billion two-year budget more to his liking.
The governor used his veto pen to alter spending authorizations, decreasing funds in some areas to increase education spending. Doyle also reshaped a temporary local property tax freeze, eliminating debt service from the tax cap. The review is expected to take several weeks, according to the attorney general's office.
