SYBILLE Bedford is one of the nation's glories. If that makes her sound like the Queen Mother, so be it (though Sybille has always preferred a Bloody Mary or glass of champagne to a gin and tonic).
She was shortlisted for the Booker Prize for her superb novel Jigsaw, which many critics did not consider to be a novel; she is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a vice-president of English PEN; and in 1994 she was made a Companion of Literature (what, incidentally, ever became of that seemingly short-lived honour?).
