Advocacy group protests use of chemical by Utah refineries.

Aug. 5--A chemical used in three Utah refineries endangers nearly 700,000 Wasatch Front residents, according to the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group.

An industry spokesman said that while the chemical is potentially dangerous, it has been used safely for many years.

Nine PIRG members rallied Thursday outside the Children's Museum of Utah, calling on the Salt Lake City-area refineries to stop using hydrofluoric acid.
