SIPPING golden white wines from the vineyard stretching down the hill in front of me, I started to wonder how it had all gone so right for South Tyrol.
It's a real mix of a place, a predominantly German-speaking, semi-independent part of Italy, which was part of the Austrian Empire until the end of the First World War.
It could so easily have taken the bad parts of both cultures - say, Liebfraumilch and Italian timekeeping - but it hasn't, it's a wonderful combination.
