S IXTY years ago today an unimaginable heat, 1,000 times hotter than the sun, changed the world for ever.
The 9,000lb 'Little Boy' atomic bomb was exploded above the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Altogether, more than 78,000 of its inhabitants died, and 40,000 were doomed to die later, in that awful elimination.
Three days later - on August 9, 1945 - the Allies dropped the larger 'Fat Boy' bomb above another Japanese city, and the name of Nagasaki was added to the Domesday scenario.
Once more, tens of thousands perished.
