HIROSHIMA, Japan _ About 55,000 people attended a memorial service in Hiroshima on Saturday to mark the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the city.
The service at Peace Memorial Park in Naka Ward, Hiroshima, began at 8 a.m.
The ceremony was attended by survivors of the bombing, including those who live overseas, and representatives of victims' families as well as Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and Hiroshima residents.
Participants prayed for the spirits of the victims and expressed a wish for the elimination of nuclear weapons worldwide.
