SIR Rod Eddington's final flypast saw the British Airways boss unveil a 65pc rise in profits despite the everincreasing costs of jet fuel.

Profits at the airline soared [pounds sterling]49m to [pounds sterling]124m in the quarter to June as departing Eddington said the bill for keeping its fleet airborne increased [pounds sterling]97m to [pounds sterling]355m.

BA will now spend [pounds sterling]525m more on fuel than it paid last year - meaning the tab will top [pounds sterling]1.6bn by the end of March.

Eddington says BA 'will have to keep an eye' on spiralling fuel costs, which track crude oil prices.
