This paper endeavors to establish the reasons for the failure of a mission established by the Sisters Faithful Companions of Jesus in Brandon during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Invited by Archbishop Tache, the sisters were to be part of a network of services to insure the transmission of Catholic values, culture and education in the Northwest. An examination of their work in education reveals anti-Catholic sentiment that was fueling the flames of a larger battle being fought throughout Manitoba as the rights of Catholics to a denominational education were being called into question.
