Birdwatching is the new backpacking, says Wendy Gomersall, who picks out four of the finest destinations for getting up close to our feathered friends
The reason Bird Island, in the Seychelles, gets its name isn't difficult to work out. Beautifully unspoilt and encircled by a white-sand beach, pristine enough for any glossy travel brochure cover, the tiny coral isle is home to thousands of breeding birds - 112 species in all, including a vast colony of two million sooty terns.
The advantage of having so many birds in one place is, of course, that you don't have to search very hard to find them - leaving time to relax on ...
